This is that concept that was in a word-of-the-day mail list and I've been trying to describe for years, that was expressed as "the denying oneself of physical pleasure with the intent to be virtuous." That description was a bit more negative, but has the same general idea, of anti-hedonism, though perhaps missing the implied moral imperative in the practitioner's beliefs.
