This is really annoying here at PSU.
He's running Windows 7 64-bit on the same motherboard, so it must be possible.

So much better than installing gmail notifier, if only it actually worked. Maybe the way to go is to just install the notifier, and then set it to not run on startup.
Requires Win32 to set it up, but you can boot any ISO.
