So much better than installing gmail notifier, if only it actually worked. Maybe the way to go is to just install the notifier, and then set it to not run on startup.

The --allow-outdated-plugins option is particularly handy.
TuneAid seems like it will let you play music from a connected iPhone without iTunes, maybe?
This would work great on the Nook B&W, too.
