TuneAid seems like it will let you play music from a connected iPhone without iTunes, maybe?
especially troublesome in Vista, but still an occasional obstacle in Windows 7
Works on FreeNAS. Could be useful both on a home appliance, and on a hosted server.

Cloud-service-dependent. Maybe it can be self-managed?
Since it's just a relay and uses an Internet service, it seems like it would be easy to replace with GPIO or a Z-Wave relay, and linking it to Vera or OpenHAB. Or, maybe just an authenticated web login?
This should work for a garage-to-hallway door nicely.
